![]() The strings and instrument resonate in a way that doesn't happen if they're even a little bit off. I cross tune and with ADAE or AEAE tunings, you can tell when the fiddle is exactly "dead on" in tune. It's optimized for tuning C, G, D, A, E (and octaves of those pitches). It was far easier to get my fiddle exactly tune with the Peterson than with my Korg OT-12 chromatic tuner. I couldn't get it to stay on the scroll so I wound up clipping it onto the neck to tune (see 2nd picture). I also found that you need to do some experimentation to figure out where you can clip the tuner onto your instrument and be able to easily read the display. I found that it takes a little bit of time to get used to the rotating band thing instead of arrows or needles. So what's it like to use this in real life? With a standard tuner, even if the tuner itself is that accurate (and most of them aren't), the display makes it difficult if not impossible to get that accuracy in real-life tuning. The faster the bands move, the sharper (or flatter) you are. There are two bands appear to rotate to counter-clockwise if you're flat. Rather than using needles or arrows that indicate whether you're sharp or flat, it has a "rotating band" display. I don't claim to understand the math behind the temperaments but equal is not what you want on a violin unless you're playing with a piano.Ī strobe tuner allows you to tune more accurately in part because of its display. Most chromatic tuners that cost less than $100 support only an equal temperament. And better yet, the Stroboclip (like other Peterson tuners) has temperaments and can be set to a "violin" temperament ideal for tuning violins/fiddles. The Stroboclip is the first clip-on strobe tuner ever made. Strobe tuners are far more accurate than regular tuners. ![]() Peterson has a reputation for making very precise strobe tuners. It's more expensive than average chromatic tuners but it's an absolute bargain if you want very accurate, precise tuning. Summary: anyone who wants to be really in tune should just buy one, especially if you cross tune a lot. ![]()
